Sitting at his desk, Edward sighed as he looked at all the work before him. It felt as though his work was never ending, and he was destined to spend his days doing mundane tasks. He might have better luck attending to his duties if his mind didn’t always return to Miss Blackmore and how they spent the evening at Vauxhall Gardens together.

Blast it!

He couldn’t seem to get her out of his head, no matter how hard he tried. For someone he found so infuriating, he was definitely spending a lot of time dwelling on her. Although, if he were being honest with himself, he was starting to soften towards Miss Blackmore. She wasn’t as awful as he made her out to be. He might even consider her pleasant.

“You are smiling,” Martin said, breaking through his musings.

His smile vanished. “I am not.”

“You were, until I pointed it out,” Martin replied smugly, walking further into the room. “What were you thinking about?”

“Nothing.”

Martin gave him a knowing look. “You weren’t thinking about ‘nothing’,” he observed. “Come on, mate, at least make the lie believable.”

Closing the ledger in front of him, Edward said, “If you must know, I was thinking about Miss Blackmore and—”

“I assumed as much,” Martin cut him off.

He shot his friend an annoyed look. “If you had let me finish, I was going to tell you about the dinner we had at Vauxhall Gardens with my sister and Mr. Caney.”

Martin sat down on a chair, facing the desk. “How did that go?”

“Splendidly,” he replied. “I find that Mr. Caney is somewhat tolerable.”

“Somewhat?”

He nodded. “That is what I said, isn’t it?”

“Why is he only ‘somewhat tolerable’?”

“Because he is much too cheery for my sake,” he admitted. “He smiles for no apparent reason. It baffles me.”

“Everyone is too cheery for your sake,” Martin remarked with a note of laughter in his voice. “That is just one of the many things I like about you.”

“Things are progressing nicely between my sister and Mr. Caney,” Edward commented. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he offers for her soon.”

Martin eyed him closely. “Would you be all right with that?”

“I would,” he replied.

Appearing pleased with his admission, Martin asked, “Has Miss Blackmore found you a bride yet?”

“Not yet.”

“And you want Miss Blackmore to find you a bride?”

Edward furrowed his brows. “Yes,” he replied. “After all, that is what I hired her to do.”

Martin shrugged. “It just seems that you and Miss Blackmore get along so nicely that you two would suit.”

Edward chuckled dryly. “We would never suit.”

“Why not?”

“Because Miss Blackmore is much too opinionated for my taste,” he explained. “Furthermore, we have barely become friends.”

Martin grinned. “You are friends now?”

“Yes,” he replied. “Why wouldn’t we be?”

His friend put his hands up in surrender. “I just find it amusing, that’s all.”

“Well, there is nothing amusing about it,” he grumbled.

Martin’s expression grew serious, but the corners of his mouth twitched. “Of course not.”

Edward let out a deep sigh. “Remind me again why I am friends with you.”

“That’s easy. You enjoy my company,” Martin replied, smirking.
